Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

What are your attendance requirements?

One of the best parts of our program is the flexibility we offer to families. Participation in our program is voluntary, and we do not have attendance requirements. We follow a traditional school year calendar and are open September-June, with optional summer programs.

Do you accept children with special needs?

Due to limits on our special education resources as a non-state-funded program, we don’t currently meet the needs of all types of children, but certain learning differences can be accommodated by our program.

Staff are always open to collaborating with parents or therapists, in the interest of supporting a child.

Please schedule a call with us to discuss your child’s needs and our ability to accommodate them.

Can my child get all of their academic needs met?

We offer both academic and enrichment classes daily and your child may get all of their academic needs met. As a co-op, we consider the parent their child’s primary educator, you may enroll your child for any courses you see fit for your child’s education.

How do you assess students without tests?

Your child will work on building a portfolio with our facilitators to showcase their learning and completed projects. This portfolio is used in collaboration with families to create a full-picture view of their child’s progress and learning experiences. Children will work through their personal checklist of goals based on their age, ability, and level.

We gently assess reading ability and progress to ensure we are supporting children effectively in their literacy development.

How many children per class?

We allow only up to 11 children per group. Our groups are mixed age and ability-based. For drop-in classes, we allow up to 13 children per class.

Is 2-hours per day really enough time for learning reading and math?

We focus our time on customized instruction, which means your child will be learning at their level the entire time. Due to our small class sizes there is no wasted time on large group behavior management, or time wasted on content that is already mastered.

How do you handle bullying?

Every child in our program signs a contract agreeing to treat themselves, the space, and others with respect. We take this agreement very seriously; breaches of it activate a process known as Culture Circle in which a group of staff and students dedicated building a safe and supportive community gather to decide how to address the problem. Sometimes, simply hearing from their peers motivates a child to change bullying behavior. Sometimes more serious consequences are needed. A child who persistently chooses to break their contract will be asked to leave the community.

Do you offer scholarships?

We do offer a limited number of 20-50% scholarships per year. Please reach out to inquire.

We also partner with several virtual school programs that reduce the tuition payment for families by up to $160 per month.

Do you have a specific religious affiliation?

No. We are a secular program. We welcome all religious backgrounds into our program, but we do not teach and are not affiliated with any religion.

What are your hours?

Our drop-in hours run from 8:30am-3:30pm, Monday thru Friday.

Do you prioritize certain subjects?

We prioritize literacy and mathematics daily, which we work on in the mornings from 8:30-10:30am. The rest of our day includes our experiential learning class, project-based learning aligned to a monthly theme, play/socialization/SEL, nature immersion, and enrichment classes (STEM, geography, cooking, art, etc…).

What does the Experiential day entail?

Our experiential day is scheduled every Tuesday. On this day we may meet off-site or at our usual location for experiential learning. We may visit the museum, library, zoo, parks, etc… as part of our lesson.

How do you offer flexible scheduling?

Your child may attend a single class per week, a few days per week, or attend the entire week. We know that many families are seeking more time together and less rush in the mornings, and therefore we do not have full-time attendance requirements.

We are homeschoolers, can my child enroll?

Yes!

What if I’m not comfortable teaching a class?

That’s okay! We encourage active participation in our co-ops programs. Parents are encouraged to contribute their skills and resources in many ways, not just by teaching a class. There are many other volunteer options throughout the year such as donating items, donating snack, attending a field trip, or printing at home.

Are you a private school?

No, we are a homeschool cooperative designed to support families in their homeschooling journey. We collaborate to enhance the educational experiences of our children through shared classes, activities, and resources.
